Graig Farm has decided to help market the unwanted dairy calves.

It was not until I went into a shop recently to purchase a bottle of milk and a bottle of water that I was shocked to see water at 50 pence per litre and milk coming in at 43 pence per litre.

What has gone wrong?

Well, the truth is that supermarkets use certain staple food items as a loss leader and milk is one of them. In the 1940`s milk was sold in the village shop for around 1.5 pence per pint. In today’s money that would be around 60 pence per pint and that would equate to 102 pence per litre - more than 2.5 times the amount farmers get today.

The small dairy farmer is starting to be something of the past and those who are still in it are struggling to survive.

The small farmer is already giving way to the unwanted mega dairies where cattle do not see the light of day and their grass is shipped in from the fields.

I believe that the picture scene of a small farm yard of cows, sheep, pigs, goats, chickens, ducks, geese, dogs and cats will just occur in children’s picture books unless we do something about it.

So in order to help the dairy industry I think it’s time to look at Veal being readily available with in the UK.

At the moment, unwanted dairy bull calves are shot at birth as there is currently little demand for them.

During the past year, I have been working closely with my cousin, who owns a small holding, and much has been discussed to see how she could further develop her scheme to save these calves and rear them up to 11 months old to allow them to qualify as ‘Rosa Veal’.

‘Rosé Veal’ is similar to beef but has a smoother texture, richer taste and is lower in fat and cholesterol.

As with traditional beef, it is available in the regular cuts - steaks, escalope's, mince and casserole meat - and there are additional specialities such as liver and shin.

Unlike ‘white veal’ where the calf is reared to 16 to 20 weeks old and fed entirely on milk, the ‘Rosé Veal’ is fed milk replacer to a maximum of seven litres a day until they are eight weeks old by which time they have been weaned onto a highly fibrous diet. As a result of their varied diet they produce a pinker, tastier meat than that of ‘white veal’.
