Traceability of Graig Farm Meat

Like many things in this modern world, traceability is not new. This is a quote from a magazine from 1922 :

“It is stated that in the Danish system of registration of dairy produce, the history of each egg is known, so that it is possible to trace a doubtful one to the farm where it was laid. This is a great improvement on the British method of employing bloodhounds and archaeologists”.

Punch Magazine - 1922

Butcher, Kevin Stephens, checks traceability details on lambsThere are however, great benefits to be achieved from a fully traceable pack of meat. In the Graig Farm system, each pack has a label explaining where the animal was reared, a little about the farm, the breed, and a website address where more information about the farm can be found.

The Graig Farm Producer Group is a network of farmers across Wales and the Borders, which was started soon after Graig Farm was established in 1988. All our livestock is sourced from the Group, and we therefore have complete knowledge of where our animals come from. For more information about the Group, click here.

Traceability labelThe traceability of our produce is achieved by a system of labels and barcodes on each carcass, from when it arrives from the abattoir. The coding system, is maintained as it passes through the various stages of processing at Graig Farm.

With details of each farmer who supplies us on our database, we can print a label for each pack of meat, explaining about each farm. The information given is the nmae of the farmer, location of farm, and breed ofthe animal. There is also a website address to find out more about the farm.We believe this is a unique system in the British Organic sector.
