The Taylor Family
HomeFarm, near Shrewsbury
The Taylor family have been farming in north east Shropshire for 300 years. The current generations, Chris, his brother Sam and his son Nick farm a mixed enterprise farm some 3 miles east of Shrewsbury.
The farm is surrounded by ancient woodland and nearby are the ancient woodlands of the historic Haughmond Abbey. It is likely that the land was farmed by monks before the dissolution of the Monasteries using similar techniques to those used today - such as green mauring and rotations.
Some of the farm is currently in conversion with some already organic. The main organic enterprise is the pig herd, but there will also be an organic dairy herd as well as arable cropping such as potatoes, carrots, sugar beet, beans, lupins and corn (all of the arable crops are already organic).
The farm is in the Stewardship pilot scheme, which aims to improve the environmental aspects of farming. There is also a woodland replanting scheme in operation.
The Taylor family hope that the recent move to organic farming will ensure that this land will remain productive long into the future.
