The Can-O-Worms

Eating healthy, organic food, as we all know, is good for us. Recycle the vegetable peelings and cooked food scraps that this produces and help the environment too by reducing the amount of waste going into landfill, saving ‘waste miles’ and putting back valuable nutrients into the soil that would otherwise be lost.

You will probably produce somewhere in the region of 200 kilos of organic household waste in the next twelve months. You could be making organic compost and liquid plant feed for your house and garden plants instead.

The Can-O-Worms is designed to recycle a households organic kitchen waste into compost, easily, without smell or mess. Don’t be put off by the use of worms - they are clean, odourless and natures greatest waste disposal army !

The kits’ innovative layered structure lets you see at a glance what the worms are doing and lets you harvest your worm casts simply by lifting up the trays - you don’t have to handle the worms.

Because you can see the normally hidden process of composting in action Can-0-Worms, is also ideal for first time composters and children.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Can-O-Worms operating

Why use worms?

They are simply the best method of composting kitchen waste, designed over millions of years into the fastest natural composters by far - each healthy worm can eat up to half its own weight in waste a day They can handle small amounts of waste continually throughout the year, even things like cooked and smelly waste.

Where do the worms in the Can-O-Worms come from?

All the worms from Wiggly Wigglers are native British species and are indigenous throughout Western Europe. Three out of the 28 British species are included in the unit, which work together on different wastes. They are not at all harmful to the environment.

Who is already using worms for composting?

Recognised experts like the HDRA, Royal Horticultural Society and Centre for Alternative Technology, plus several thousand households in Britain and millions of other homes throughout the world.

I have a garden compost heap, should I have a Can-O-Worms too?

Absolutely! The garden heap works best on large volumes of garden waste such as fallen leaves, prunings etc. but has problems with kitchen waste. For one thing, who wants to walk to the end of the garden every time there is a teabag to throw away?

The Can-O-Worms is neat enough to use indoors, works fast enough to prevent rotting smells, is easy to manage and efficient enough to let you harvest small amounts of compost as you need them.

How does Can-O-Worms Work?

The kit contains native composting worms which eat ‘organic’ waste 24 hours a day As they eat they reduce the volume and produce compost and liquid fertiliser which you can use. It’s very simple - you add your scraps every day to the uppermost working tray and the worms eat It. They regulate their numbers to the amount of waste you add, so it doesn't matter If you live alone or are a family of four or five - you start gradually and build up the amount of waste for your worms to cope with. (It can hold 6,000 worms!)

Can-0-Worms is unique in having four layers. The base layer is the collector tray and is raised off the floor on legs, making it easy to drain off the liquid. (Dilute this 10:1 as a general purpose plant feed).

The worms live in the three upper trays. They are started in the bottom tray - when this is full you add another tray and so forth until all three trays are in use. The worms ‘eat their way up’ through tiny holes in the base of each tray making compost as they go, leaving their waste behind.

By the time the top tray is full of scraps the worms will have left the bottom tray, leaving it full of rich dark worm casts. Now it’s time to remove the bottom tray and, after emptying out its harvest, put it back as the new top level tray

The kit is self perpetuating, the worms breed and fulfil their natural life-cycle within the unit, so as long as you keep adding fresh waste the kit will continue to work.

What can I recycle in the Can-O-Worms?

The worms will eat all types of organic matter including cooked food, vegetable peelings, dog hair, hoover dust, paper and card. Avoid highly acidic foods such as citrus fruits and onions and obviously you can only add biodegradable material - no glass, tins or plastic.

Where should I keep the Can-O-Worms?

The Can-0-Worms can be kept indoors or outside near the backdoor or in a sheltered spot in the garden.

Does the Can-O-Worms contain everything I need to start composting?

Yes. We supply the Can-0-Worms with a special Value Pack which includes approximately 1,000 Worms, starter bedding, a Moisture Mat, some Worm Treat and Lime Mix plus full comprehensive instructions.
