The Isle of Mull, Scotland

The Island Bakery is a small business on the Isle of Mull, owned and run by Joseph and Dawn Reade. Joe has lived on Mull since the age of eleven, growing up on the family farm where Isle of Mull Cheese continues to be made. Dawn joined him in 1994, moving to Mull after meeting in Edinburgh where they were students.
Together they have built The Island Bakery from scratch, first by baking bread in the wee small hours and driving it across the island to be sold in local shops, then by establishing their own shop in Tobermory where as well as fresh bread, cakes and pastries, they also have a well stocked delicatessen counter, speciality foods, wine, cheeses and ice-cream on sale. They have both put on weight.

The Range
Available in 150g packs or handy lunch packs of 2 biscuits.
Shortbread

Any Scottish range would have to have shortbreads. Winners of several awards, these are delicious! Joe and Dawn describe their shortbreads : "To make light buttery shortbread, you need plenty of butter. Our shortbread has more butter in it than you are likely to find in any other. Heaps of it. We can guarantee that each pack contains 100% of your recommended daily allowance of butter, and more besides. But we can also guarantee that it tastes better than any other."
Oat Crumbles

Then there are the Oat Crumbles....... What makes a good oat crumble? Well, good oats and good crumbles. The oats are the best we could find – not just organic, but plump and rich. The crumbly bit comes from BUTTER (again), which melts in the mouth and gives a smooth, round flavour. Added to the blend is the best organic honey produced by busy organic bees.
Lemon Melts

Our Lemon Melts are utterly melty and totally irresistible. We know this, because we’ve put on quite a few pounds whilst testing them. We tested and tested until we got them just right. Then we tested a few packs more, just to be sure. The lemon flavour comes simply from pure lemon oil – as with all our products the recipe is simple, and the ingredients natural. And to complement the delicate texture and flavour of the biscuit, each one is half- dipped in the chocoholic’s dream – a giant vat of melted white chocolate.
Chocolate Gingers

Chocolate also features prominently in our fourth biscuit – Chocolate Gingers. As the name would suggest, ginger is involved too. A generous chunk of crystallised stem ginger sits in the middle of each biscuit, which in turn is dipped in dark chocolate. Don’t bother counting the calories, because you’ll run out of fingers. Fingers were designed for picking up biscuits.

Chocolate and Nut Cookies
A delicious organic flute biscuit from Belgium. They are a crisp and light biscuit, often served with various different desserts (ice cream, yoghurt, mousse, fryuit purees or chestnut spread), but are just as nice with tea or coffee.

Almond and Chocolate Cantuccini
Two traditional Italian speciality biscuits, these typical Cantuccini are made in Abruzzo in the eastern coast of the country. Canucvini are hard and crunchy. They are delicious with a sweet desert wine or coffee and sometimes dunked to soften.
Traditional Galette biscuitsThese delicious French biscuits are baked in the heart of Normandy, an area famed for its dairy produce and gastronomy. These are excellent with tea or coffee as well as great with a fruit dessert or yoghurt or crème caramel type dessert.
"The long savoy biscuits are a form of crisp sponge, and were served with egg nogs and light sweet wines, such as Madeira cake was served with Madeira wine. In some country districts they were nicknamed "funeral fingers", being laid out with the sherry to greet mourners. My aunt told me that in Wales in the 1870's it was correct to give little faggots of these biscuits, neatly tied up with black tape and tissue paper, to children to eat on the long cold drive to the funeral."

Gluten-free and Dairy-free Biscuits

Against the Grain is the clever name of a new range of gluten- and dairy-free biscuits. Unlike many other similar products, these actually taste delicious, and can be enjoyed as excellent biscuits in their own right. They are wheat, dairy and gluten free. The founder of ATG, and the brains behind the recipes is Lisa Worthington, who has developed the biscuits after years of making them at home and selling through farmer's markets. They are deliciously more-ish - even without butter or wheat flour.
The range consists of Almond Cookies, Ginger Crunchies, Berry Delicious and Choc Chip & Hazelnut. Packed in 150g packs.
| Doves Farm offers a delicious gluten-free biscuit - Lemon Zest, which is also a Fair Trade product. | ![]() |

The herbs are grown without using unnecessary herbicides or pesticides and are picked daily for local restaurants and for biscuit production. The Herb Oatmeal range are home made using fresh herbs and local Organic Wholemeal Flour and Oatmeal. They are hand rolled and baked at Alderton Hall Farm and may show some small variation in thickness and colour. The range has been created to complement fine cheese. The Dill biscuits go perfectly with smoked salmon and cream cheese whilst Goat’s Cheese is particularly delicious with the Savoury Lavender Oatmeal Biscuits.
