Pendre Farm, Painscastle

Roy and Avril Lloyd's farm is in their blood! They explain their attachment and describe the farm :

"Pendre is in the hamlet of Painscastle in the Welsh Borders high above the Wye Valley. It has been in the same family for 6 generations and was being farmed organically long before anyone thought of the word !

The sturdy Hereford cattle are reared on about 200 or so acres of rolling grassland and the sheep have the run of the surrounding heather hills, also home to herds of wild ponies, grouse and various birds of prey - especially buzzards.

The hamlet of Painscastle has long been associated with supplying meat for the table and was an important stop-over for the old drovers taking their cattle from West Wales to the markets in London. At this time there were a number of inns in Painscastle. Just one remains today. It recently burned to the ground and is now being rebuilt.

The open hills stretching westwards contain a network of old green lanes and drovers roads which cross Wales from the border to the coast at Cardigan Bay. Pendre is the starting point for the many horse riders who set out from here to follow these old trails.

A Pendre Roast is not just tender and wholesome. The discerning palate will detect the hills of Wild Wales, a strong flavour which an old drover would recognise, with perhaps just a gentle hint of horseradish or mint sauce."
