The Brown Crab

Crab potThe brown crab is the heaviest British crab. They are found in waters down to 100 m. Brown crabs are highly fecund and spawn mainly in the winter months. They can grow up to about 300 mm width. The crab is encased in a hard, rigid shell, which, like other crustaceans, has to be shed at intervals to permit growth. Moulting takes place at frequent intervals during the first years of a crab's life, but only every two years after it is grown.

The Fishery

Potting is a low impact method of fishing. It is used within the specially protected South Devon Fishery Area because it does not disturb the sea bed, and inferior or damaged crabs can be returned alive to heal themselves and grow. The crabs are also protected against over exploitation in the South Devon Fishery through the Inshore Potting Agreement, which results in strong and effective harvest controls (such limiting fishing during certain months for both crabbers and trawlers), to ensure sustainable exploitation. The Potting Agreement has created positive environmental benefits such as increased biodiversity and abundance of benthic (bottom dwelling) species.

Landed daily, the live crabs are stunned humanely (a very new and not widely used innovation) and cooked at a controlled temperature and duration for optimum quality. Only the fullest of crabs are selected. The meat is then packed, pasteurised and frozen.

There are two types of crab meat - white and brown.

We offer different packs for white (100 and 227g) and mixed 50:50 white and brown (120 and 227g).

With shell removed, except for a single pincer, this is a delicious and attractive and fun way to present crab meat. Crab claws are available in this form in 150g packs.

The crab meat is avaialble also available entirely stripped of shell, and packed in 454g.
