Graig Farm - Who We Are > Packaging & Recycling

Packaging & Recycling

Our recycling policy is to ensure minimum waste production, together with maximum recycling. This is carried out in a number of ways:

  • We try to minimise our use of packaging whilst conforming to legal requirements and producing an attractive product. We are aiming to make our packaging as recyclable/biodegradable as possible. We have been involved in a number of trials with biodegradable packaging, although none has yet proved effective with meat.
  • We now use an almost entirely recyclable and compostable system of packing parcels for mail order customers.  A wool-based insulation material is natural, clean and extremelly efficient at insulation. the wool is covered in a compostable cover (we use this insulation system when it is financially appropriate), and the 'void fillers' which prevent the food from being damaged by moving around during transit is also made from a degradable material. This is all packed in a strong but recyclable cardboad box. Due to current costs we do also continue to use other insulation systems, which we intend to phase out as the cost effectiveness of fully biodegradable systems improve.
  • Our insulation material for mail order parcels are returnable (by use of a Freepost label) and re-useable where suitable.
  • Until household collection started locally, we had a recycling centre on the farm, with facilities for cardboard, plastic, glass & textiles. There is no local collection of glass, a collection facility for which we still have on the farm.
  • Wherever possible we use materials which are easily recyclable
