Organic Fairtrade decaffeinated coffee Decaffeinated Coffee
CO2 is the method used to gently remove caffeine from coffee beans. Don't worry, CO2 is part of coffee satisfaction, not a chemical equation. Compressed to a liquid state, carbon dioxide - the compound we exhale with every breath - is a natural solvent that grabs caffeine and pulls it from the bean. Because carbon dioxide adheres only to caffeine and not to the elements that give coffee it’s great flavour, CO2 decaff has more zing than any other decaffeinated coffees we've tried. We hope you'll enjoy your Equal Exchange Decaffeinated coffee more (and drink more of it!) knowing that it's naturally decaffeinated to be 99.9% caffeine free.

Organic Fairtrade Teas

We offer a range of EqualExchange organic teas, which are also Fairtraded.

Fair Trade
The Fairtrade Mark ensures that estates on the register meet a set of minimum social welfare, health and environmental standards. It also provides a structure for the social premium to be used for the benefit of the communities social economy.

Indian Teas

Selimbong, Seeyok and Banaspaty Tea Estates

All tea in EqualExchange's single garden organic teabags and loose teas are grown in the Darjeeling or Assam regions of northern India.
The local community identified education as the principle area for investment and already in collaboration with the estate and the fair trade exporter, the social premium has enabled the building of a Further Education College and a High School.

Organic Production
Years of neglect and deforestation in the region have lead to serious problems of landslides and soil erosion during monsoon rains. In attempts to stabilise these effects the estates have become regional leaders practicing sustainable organic agriculture. Long term soil fertility and plant health is maintained by a combination of composting, green manuring and growing of nitrogen fixing legumes. Inter-cropping and spraying with the natural (and permitted) insecticide Neem helps to control pests.

Processing and Packing
The teas are blended and packed in Calcutta. Why? Many rural people continue to seek their fortunes in the big cities. Often they exchange rural poverty for a much fiercer urban poverty!

Source of Rooibos
The Rooibos (Africaans for Red Bush - (Aspalatus linearis)) is a native of the southern tip of South Africa, around Capetown, under the Cederberg Mountains. Part of the unique and spectacular Cape floral kingdom, Rooibos grows here and nowhere else in the world.

EqualExchange's Organic and Fairtraded Rooibos tea is from the Heiveld Co-op, which was established to promote the sustainability of the livelihoods of its members. Eighteen women and men from the community are members of the Co-op. They produce their tea proudly by hand, and make minimal use of machinery. Hand harvesting ensures a finer quality of tea, and is also kinder to the tea bushes than mechanical harvesting.

Organic Fairtrade Rooibos harvesting

The necessary combination of soils and climate is unique. The most flavourful tea is produced on the remote plateaux of the Suid Bokkeveld Mountains. The deep sandy soils, cool moist winters and hot dry summers suit Rooibos perfectly. Here the small scale farmers of the Heiveld Co-operative cultivate and harvest their Rooibos bushes. They process it to produce the finest Rooibos tea.

Organic
The members of the Heiveld Co-op have practised organic farming for generations. Living close to nature, they have learned to work with it, and not against it. In the year 2000 all of the members registered as organic producers under EU standards.

Organic production, and careful handling ensure consumers that the tea that they drink contains no harmful ingredients. Organic production also helps to conserve nature in the Bokkeveld, and to keep the elements in balance. Birds, insects and even soil bacteria thrive in a healthy environment.

The Producers
Organic Fairtrade Cocoa processingThe Confederacion Nacional de Cacaocultores Dominicanos (CONACADO) represents some 9,000 small-scale growers in the Dominican Replublic, most of whom who farm less than three hectares. Its aim is to sell cacao beans directly for export and to improve producers income and living conditions by reducing intermediaries and dependency. It also offers technical help to improve the production quality of the cocoa.

Cocoa is the second most important crop to the Dominican Republic after sugar. However most farmers in CONACADO only augment incomes by growing bananas and other fruit and vegetables for local markets or their own use.

Processing
Ripe cacao pods of the Hispaniola variety are harvested and cracked open with machetes to begin the first stage of processing. Pods are heaped in piles to ferment for up to six days. This is a stage crucial to developing the right flavour during later manufacture into chocolate. The fermented cacao beans must be thoroughly dried before export.

Organic Fairtrade Sugar

Organic Fairtrade SugarThe natural juice is pressed from sun-ripened sugar cane then filtered and crystallised. No further refining is necessary to produce this free-flowing granulated sugar, suitable for all purposes.

Producers
Farmers of the Asociacion Agricola Canera del Sur, Iturbe in Paraguay, grow this organic raw cane sugar. It is a democratic association of small-scale farmers who grow sugar cane, cotton and soybeans and tend livestock on farms averaging six hectares. The association was set up to negotiate with the processing mill for the raw cane which it still does along with maintaining local roads and providing medical assistance.

Organic Fairtrade Sugar cane productionFairtrade importers buy sugar from the mill at a market price plus a Fairtrade premium that is paid directly to the Farmers Association. Fifty per cent of the premium is distributed to the organic growers and 50% reinvested in the association. In this way the farmers themselves receive a higher income and their association become stronger and more viable.

Fairtrade standards require mill workers to be paid according to national statutory minimum’s including welfare premiums.
