Our top quality strawberry plants are supplied as "fresh-dug".
Plant Availability : End October until early May (We can also supply cold-stored plants from May to early July if ordered before early March)
There are eight strawberry varieties available for the 2007/8 season:
Early Mid-Summer
'Haneoye' - Still the main early variety that has a good upright growth habit. It seems to perform particularly well in the north and the west. Lovely flavoured fruit, best picked regularly. Can sometimes be susceptible to mildew under stress.
Mid-Summer
'Cambridge Favourite' - Fruiting early to late July. 'Cambridge Favourite' is one of the well-known older varieties, still earning its place because of its reliability and tolerance. The fruit is paler than the modern varieties, but the juiciness and sweet flavour makes it still the favourite for many. Its dense growing habit makes it susceptible to botrytis in wet seasons.
'Pegasus' - Probably one of the best disease resistant mid-season varieties, preferring slightly heavier soils. Has excellent resistance to wilt, crown rot and mildew. Fruits are of high quality and excellent flavour.'Hapil'
Heavy yields of large, glossy, sweet fruit. Crops especially well on lighter soils and in drier conditions. It has as an upright growth habit but can occasionally be susceptible to mildew and also to verticillium wilt .
Late Mid-Season
'Alice' - An exciting selection from HRI East Malling. It is a few days earlier than Symphony and Florence, and has a very long picking season. The plant has an upright habit and has excellent disease resistance particularly to wilt and crown rot and seems to have good mildew resistance too. The fruit are large, sweet and juicy and evenly sized. Looks an impressive new variety and looks good for organic growing conditions.
Late Summer
'Symphony' - A high-yielding Scottish late season variety producing high quality bright red fruit with excellent flavour. The plants have very good disease resistance, especially against red core. An excellent choice for the west and north, it seems to excel in the damper conditions. An excellent choice for organic growers.
'Florence' - An East Malling variety with outstanding , vigorous plants showing excellent disease resistance, especially against mildew. Large, bright firm but juicy red berries with an excellent flavour. A must for the organic grower. Also shows some resistance to vine weevil, we are told.
'Sophie' - A very late season variety (late july - early August) from HRI East Malling that can usefully extend the season. A dense foliage but with high yields of well presented, good quality fruit. Found to be an excellent growing variety by Sian and Nigel Fronant.
