Jonathan Lewis
Priors Halton Farm, Ludlow
The farmer, Jonathan Lewis, together with his father, George farm the 550 acres of Priors Halton Farm.
Jonathan describes the farm :
Priors Halton is a 550 acres mixed organic farm, just one mile from the gourmet food town of Ludlow in Shropshire.
Stocking and Cropping
We have about 170 Aberdeen Angus cattle and 500 Suffolk cross breeding ewes that produce around 800 lambs per year.
Alongside the livestock we grow almost 200 acres of arable crops including wheat, barley, and spring beans. These are fed to the livestock during the winter months and also guarantees total traceability!
The Environment
To complement our organic farming methods, the farm is also involved with other environmental work including:
-
leaving three metre grass margins around every field to encourage ground nesting birds;
-
creating a water meadow on a piece of river ground
-
carrying out hedgerow restoration throughout the farm
Other Activities
My father runs a farm shop in the village.
