Ian Cadwallader

Glanhafren Farm, Powys

Glanhafren is a family farm, run by Ian and Beverley Cadwallader, with support from Ian's father and uncle aged 74 and 76 respectively. The farm was bought originally from the Leighton Estate in 1932, the family having taken over the tenancy at the turn of the century. The estate is in the Severn Valley just south of Welshpool, and was owned by John Naylor a banker from Liverpool.

On the edge of the farm is the Cilcewydd Corn Mill, and on the farm and still being used to house cattle is the Llanafan Great Barn, which is a superb example of a High Victorian Farm Complex, and was used as a grain terminal on the railway. John Naylor pioneered the use of power in agriculture, and both the Mill and the rail terminal were powered by water turbines.

The present farm is 175 acres and runs 72 milking cows and their followers, and a flock of Suffolk X ewes that are put to a Suffolk ram. Their lambs are fattened principally on permanent pasture, and are marketed from mid April as Early Season lambs.
