Graig Farm - What is Organic? > Humane Slaughter

Humane Slaughter

Having taken such care in rearing the animals, it is important that they are slaughtered as quickly and humanely as possible. As a part of the organic trail, organic animals must be slaughtered in an organically inspected and approved slaughter-house.

For most of our animals we use a small, local slaughter-house, approved by the Soil Association, where great care is taken to ensure a swift and humane end.

In the case of poultry, they are slaughtered on the farm where they are reared.

It is a specific part of Graig Farm's policy to minimise transport of animals to slaughter. As a part of that policy, we use a number of abattoirs across Wales and the Borders.

The UK's network of smaller slaughterhouses have been under threat over the past few years, although a reprieve has been granted by government from excessive inspection charges. For more details on the campaign to save the smaller abattoirs click here.
