High Harcourt Farm

Romsley, West Midlands

Stuart and Sadie Geggie describe their farm :

"The National Trust bought the farm in 1987, and we have farmed there since then. High Harcourt is a 277 hectare (610 acre) fully organic grassland farm, and has light to medium soils. The land rises to over 1,000 feet above sea level.

The farm is surrounded by 500 acres of woodland which is managed by the National Trust, and known as 'The Clent Hills'.

Cattle
We have a self-contained herd of 92 cows, mainly Angus cross Limousin. The calves are born between October and december and stay with their mothers until the end of the summer, when they are brought into airy sheds for the winter. They are fed mainly hay and grass silage, and their bedding is straw. During the late Spring and Summer, they graze the pastures around the farm and are sold between 2 and 2 and a hlf years old as prime beef.

Sheep
We have around 1,500 breeding ewes, mainly Suffolk cross Charollais, lambing half in February and half at the end of March. The lambs stay with their mothers until they are old enough to graze for themselves, and are sold between May and September as prime lamb."
