Cliff, Maureen & Simon Carnell
Llystyn Farm, Brechfa, Carmarthenshire, West Wales

Cliff Carnell describes his farm :
"We have farmed organically since 1978 and at our present 212 acre holding in the Brechfa Forest since we moved here from Warwickshire in 1991.
Despite the thin clay-loam soils over shaley rock we have managed to grow a 100% organic diet for our South Devon cross suckler cows and their beef, and for our Welsh cross lamb, helped by crimping home-grown cereals.
Over half the farm is permanent pasture but the flatter fields grow red or white clover/grass swards in a 5-year rotation including the cereals. Winter-housed animals yield a carefully made compost with the home-grown straw.
We have received awards for conservation from The Loraine Trust, and for our carrots.
Holidaymakers can enjoy both the spacious self-catering accommodation in a converted stone barn and the glorious scenery. They are free to roam the farm and help if they wish!
Our strong commitment to conservation has been extended through Hedgerow, Habitat
and now Tir Goval schemes with flower rich meadows, broad-leaved woodland with acres of inspiring bluebells and 5 miles of thick hedgerows surrounding 29 fields. We are trying to make a small contribution towards re-creating a farming environment rich in diversity for all living things ..... including us!! ..... we all may need it."
