"There was a sudden glut of meat for smoking or salting in the autumn, when the cattle had to be killed off because of lack of winter fodder. Christmas was a time of 'large tabling and belly-cheer', after which belts were tightened until the spring. There were more fast days than feast days in the calendar, but those who could afford it were whole-hearted in their feasting. In preparation for Christmas at Winchester Castle in 1206, King John commanded the Sheriff of Hampshire to procure 1,500 chickens, 5,000 eggs, 20 oxen, 100 pigs and 100 sheep!"
