Bronwen & Michael Janes

The Waun, Monmouthshire

The waun pasture

The Waun is a 140 acre organic holding with a further 60 acres rented, situated in the beautiful Welsh county of Monmouthshire, incorporating 27 acres of traditional Parkland with many mature oak and beech trees and a number of small hay meadows growing different species of grasses and wild flowers. There is also a small bluebell wood with a flowing stream. The farm also participates in the Welsh Environmental scheme Tir Gofal.

Farmed organically since the year 2000 it is run and managed by Bronwen and Michael Janes with a little help from their 3 daughters and son and extended family including grandchildren at weekends.

The farm produces beef, sheep and cereals and is licensed with the Soil Association.

Native breeds of cattle are kept, principally South Devon and Sussex. The calves graze alongside their mothers until weaning at 10months of age.

The family make a real commitment to the keeping of rare breed livestock which includes pedigree Red Poll and Gloucester cattle.

A flock of the rare breed sheep, Dorset Downs, as featured on the television programme ‘River Cottage’ was started by youngest daughter Holly some seven years ago. As a result almost all of the sheep in the flock have some Dorset Down in their breeding.
