JUTE SHOPPING BAG

BUY NOW

There is no doubt that the use of plastic bags has to reduce drastically, not only in terms of its disposal, but also in the energy used in its manufacture leading to CO2 production and the resultant climate change.

We are pleased to offer our customers a natural jute bag, which is an attractive and more environmentally friendly alternative to the palstic bag.

It's manufacture produces CO2, but like Graig Fram Organics, the manufacturers of the bags have teamed up with Climate Crae to offset the CO2 produced.

The bags are strong, and easy to carry, have a good volume, and with strengthened and padded handles, are easy to carry. Made in India under strict working conditions and transported to this country by ship to avoid air pollution, Jute bags are totally biodegradable using only natural materials and traditional skills to combat a distinctly modern, world pollution problem. Jute bags are extremely durable - one Jute bag will last longer than many thousands of plastic bags and unlike its plastic counterpart, when finally discarded a Jute bag will naturally decompose.

About Jute

Jute is a tall tropical crop, which is very fibrous in its stem and is traditionally used for making hessian sacking. A substantial industry, employing millions of people, has developed around the production of fine quality Jute. Grown mainly in India, on small family owned plots around the Ganges River Delta, Jute is obtained from two varieties of plant: Corchorus Capsularis and Corchorus Olitorus. It is a natural bast fibre composed of cellulose (the main building material of all plants) and is totally biodegradable. This fibre grows the entire length of the plant stalk from root to top - some can be 10 - 15 feet (3 - 4.5 metres) in length. It is harvested from July to October when the plant is in flower, or when the seed pods are just forming, the long reed like stalks are hand cut and left to dry naturally before the leaves are removed. To extract the fibres, the surrounding bark and pith have to be decomposed. This is achieved by soaking the stalks in ponds or slow moving streams to induce a fermentation process known as 'retting'. This process lasts approximately three weeks after which the fibres are easily stripped from the core by hand.
