Lane farm

In the heart of ";Kilvert Country", the Rhosgoch/Painscastle valley offers a number of attractions for the discerning traveller. In this quiet valley, far from main roads and the hum of the 21st century, you will find peace and tranquillity. There are the remains of Pains Castle, one of the most important castles in Radnorshire and the site of an ancient fort long before the medieval castle was built, and possibly of a Roman Camp. There are numerous burial mounds and other ancient remains in the area; heather moorland and the Rhosgoch Bog, both protected and conserved by the Countryside Council for Wales; and small hill farms.

For the modem visitor we have a golf course, trout fishing, horse riding on our wonderful open hills, and miles and miles of open space for walking and bird watching. We also have the churches visited and loved by the Rev. Francis Kilvert and immortalised in his diaries; Bryngwyn, Llanbedr, Newchurch and Llandewi Fach.

Map to Lane farmOver all this is the clear sky and clear air of the west country; a sky populated by buzzards and the red kite, by curlew, plover and the sky lark. Sheep make up the vast majority of the population. And yet, with the ease of transport afforded to us by the motorcar, this valley is within easy reach of centres such as Hereford, and the Black & White Heritage Trail of this lush and fertile area; Brecon and the Brecon Beacons National Park; Llandrindod Wells; and even the seaside (11/2 hours). Builth Wells, the site of the Royal Welsh Show, is only 11 miles and has its own theatre (as does Brecon), as well as all the year round activities on the showground.

Closer to hand is Hay-on-Wye(5 miles), the centre for second-hand books and abounding with antique shops and gift shops as well as being the centre for "everyday" shopping with supermarkets and farmers’ store, delicatessen, greengrocers and chemist.

Lane Farm has its own grass airstrip, 730m NE/SW; Latitude 5107.OO’N Longitude 03’11.30’W. Landing by prior permission only.
